What is a haematologist?
A Haematologist is a specialist doctor involved in the diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders, both malignant and benign.
How do I make an appointment?
You can self-refer but it is preferable for you to see your GP first and for them to refer you as appropriate. Please contact Bowen Icon Cancer Centre for an appointment time.
What happens at a consultation?
We will discuss your past medical and surgical history, current medications and any allergies. An appropriate treatment plan will be made – this may include follow-up appointments, referral to other specialists, medication and further investigations such as blood tests and x-rays.
How quickly will I be seen?
You will be seen within 1 - 2 weeks depending on the urgency of your problem.
What is a bone marrow biopsy?
In some cases a procedure may be necessary to look at your bone marrow where the blood cells are made – this is called a bone marrow biopsy. It involves injecting local anaesthetic into part of the pelvic bone and introducing a needle to suck out some marrow particles. This causes mild discomfort for a few seconds. You will be able to go home after the biopsy.
What about costs?
Costs will vary depending on the length and complexity of your consultation. This fee will be completely covered if you have private medical insurance.
Privacy and confidentiality
There will be respect for your privacy and the protection of your medical file. All staff involved in your treatment are bound by confidentiality. Your medical records will not be released or shared without your consent.
